It seemed incredibly unlikely. Not because Edwin De Los Santos wasn’t good enough, but more so because Shakur Stevenson wasn’t exactly interested.
There were more recognizable names that he wanted to get his hands on. Devin Haney was number one on his hit list. Once that showdown fell by the wayside, Stevenson was a bit vexed but he still had a long index that reached the ground filled with 135-pound opponents he would love to fight.
Vasiliy Lomachenko, William Zepeda, Isaac Cruz, and Frank Martin we’re all his preferred choices. Never in a million years, however, did Stevenson believe that practically all of the top lightweight names would turn their back and give him the cold shoulder.
So, with little to no options left, De Los Santos happily picked up the phone when it rang. Officially, the two will get it on, on November 16th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the vacant WBC title on the line.
Outside of his team, practically no one is expecting De Los Santos to grab the upset win. Even Stevenson himself can’t envision any scenario where De Los Santos is remotely competitive with him.
The two aren’t friends but in just a few more weeks, De Los Santos reveals that he’s planning an unwanted surprise for the former Olympic silver medalist.
“November 16th, I’m a surprise Shakur Stevenson,” claimed De Los Santos during a self-recorded video.
Using the eye test, Stevenson appears to be as good as it gets. The 26-year-old seldom gets hit and hasn’t had a single competitive fight as of yet.
The praise that Stevenson receives is deserved. He’s a generational talent and has the sort of skills that you simply can’t teach. That said, once he enters the ring on November 16th, Stevenson, according to De Los Santos, will be out of his element.
“In the ring, it’s my house motherf——-.”
