Duke Ragan is the latest American boxer to find success in Tokyo.
The featherweight representative of the U.S. Olympic boxing squad advances to the quarterfinal round following a three-round unanimous decision win over Kazakhstan's Serik Termizhanov. Scores were for Ragan and for Termizhanov in their Round of 16 battle Wednesday afternoon at Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo.
The bout was fought at a deliberate place in the opening round, working to the advantage of Ragan who swept the frame through patient boxing. Frustration clearly set in for Termirzhanov, who had plenty of words for Ragan after every round.
Action picked up considerably in round two, though with Cincinnati's Ragan still taking the lead. Termirzhanov picked up the pace as well, though only managing to win on two of the five scorecards. Termirzhanov was issued a soft warning for hitting on the break near the end of the round.
Ragan closed the show in round three, not letting the moment slip away following Round of 16 wins by teammates and fellow Ohio natives Delante 'Tiger' Johnson and Oshae Jones just one day ago. Termirzhanov continued to come forward but was unable to land anything of substance as Ragan played defense and returned with combinations to preserve his lead and ultimately the win.
The U.S. Olympic team is now riding an eight-fight win streak and is 8-1 overall as of Ragan's big win. It also marks the first time that USA sends a featherweight to the quarterfinal round since 2000 Sydney when Ricardo 'Rocky' Juarez came home with a Silver medal.
Ragan is also the first Cincinnati fighter to advance that far since 2000 when Ricardo Williams Jr. claimed Silver as a light welterweight. In another historical note, Ragan is the first pro fighter from the U.S. to both compete in the Olympics and advance to the quarterfinals. The Top Rank-signed fighter is joined by fellow pros Keyshawn Davis and Troy Isley, both of whom are currently in the Round of 16 at lightweight and middleweight, respectively.
Awaiting Ragan in the quarterfinals is Ireland's Kurt Walker, who pulled off a stunner in upsetting number-one seed Mirazizbek Murzakhalilov (Uzbekistan). Ragan-Walker will take place Sunday, with the winner to advance to the semifinals and guaranteed a medal.
