In what has to be considered a major upset, Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire (18-1, 11 KOs) knocked out previously undefeated Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KOs) in five rounds to capture the IBF and IBO flyweight titles.
Darchinyan was a heavy favorite to win the fight and most saw this bout as a stepping stone towards bigger things for the unbeaten champ. Nothing is set in stone in the sport of boxing. Donaire had his way with Darchinyan for all five rounds, landing his punches, getting away from counters and putting on a boxing clinic.
A final left hand bomb in the fifth knocked Darchinyan out. Donaire gets revenge for his brother Glenn, who was stopped in October of last year in six rounds after suffering a broken jaw.
In a surprise, two of the judges had the fight scored a draw going into the fifth round with scores of 38-38, while the third had Donaire up with a 40-36 score.
