World famous trainer Don Turner told the Belfast Telegraph that his new fighter, John Duddy (22-0, 17KOs), has all the tools to score an upset over WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29KOs).
Turner has trained fighters such as Aaron Pryor, Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield and James Toney. But it's Holyfield that Turner told the paper he sees in Duddy.
"I have been very impressed with the way John has worked in the gym. His dedication and determination reminds me a lot of Evander. Evander had this great desire to succeed and John has the same. He is so willing to progress as a fighter and I'm sure he can go on and be world champion," Turner said. "We have been working very hard on how he operates in the ring, working on his defence and he has come on a lot. I think John is a match for any middleweight in the world and he'll prove it."
Duddy is slated to challenge Pavlik for the middleweight crown on Jan. 26 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Former champion Jermain Taylor can easily crush Duddy's plans by exercising a rematch clause on or before Oct. 29 for a Pavlik rematch at 166-pounds.
Duddy had little trouble on Saturday when he stopped 19-year-old Prince Arron (10-2, 0KOs) in two-rounds at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. If Taylor decides to exercise the rematch clause, Duddy will return to the rin on Dec. 8 in Belfast.
