Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, everything is getting delayed these days.
The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed. Boxing events from March to June have been postponed. Countless sporting events and functions have been postponed.
One thing that won't get postponed, is Dillian Whyte's shot at the WBC heavyweight title, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
Pursuant to a WBC order, Whyte is guaranteed a shot at their world title by February 2021.
Tyson Fury, who holds the title at the moment, was scheduled to face Deontay Wilder in a trilogy fight on July 18th in Las Vegas. The pandemic has pushed back the pay-per-view to the fall, with an October date being targeted.
Hearn does not see the deadline for Whyte's title shot being delayed any further. Whyte has been the top rated challenger, under the WBC, for several years.
"I think everything is a case by case situation," Hearn told Sky Sports.
"You've got purse bids that have been called that have been delayed, and obviously those fights will be delayed. Dillian Whyte's mandatory is February 2021. I see no reason why that should be delayed, to be honest with you, because Fury is still likely to fight this year. I don't see an issue with things like that. Certainly, there will be disruption across the board."
Whyte, on the other hand, expects Fury to come out on top in the third meeting. Fury capture the title back in February, when he dropped Wilder twice and stopped him in the seventh round.
"I think Tyson Fury is better than him in every department," Whyte told Sky Sports.
"What's he going to change now that he hasn't changed in the past 12-15 years? Nothing, he's going to change nothing."
