One of the obvious questions being asked to promoter Lou DiBella, is whether WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is interested in avenging the first loss of his career, which came at the hands of Antonio Margarito in February of 2000. Over ten years ago, a 16-0 Martinez was stopped in seven rounds by Margarito on the Morales-Barrera undercard at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
DiBella has interest but pictures a brutal ending for Margarito.
"I think it would be a murder. I think if [Bob] Arum wants to do it, he knows how to get in touch with me. I'd be happy to do the fight. I'm not sure, but to some degree I'm not sure if Sergio at this point would still want it. Honestly, I don't think there's enough left in Margarito for it to be a real challenge. It's probably a fight we could sell. If we had no alternative, maybe," DiBella said.
The adviser of Martinez, Sampson Lewkowicz, told BoxingScene.com that Martinez had no interest in a Margarito rematch.
"Sergio doesn't want to hurt Margarito. He would retire him. Sergio doesn't want to end his career. He doesn't want to see Margarito get badley hurt," Lewkowicz said.
