Chris Algieri’s appearance on the undercard of Daniel Jacobs vs. Peter Quillin was the second straight time he’d been on a show associated with boxing adviser Al Haymon. His loss to Amir Khan in May came on a “Premier Boxing Champions” broadcast on Spike TV.
Algieri was coy about his promotional situation when asked about it following his decision win over Erick Bone on Dec. 5 on Showtime Extreme. “It’s complicated,” he said before confirming that he was still with Star Boxing.
Then, when asked if he had an affiliation with Haymon as well, Algieri said: “Man, next question.”
Algieri’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, told BoxingScene.com afterward that his fighter has not signed with Haymon and said that Algieri would be under contract with Star “for a long time.”
Nevertheless, it’s been beneficial to Algieri and Haymon for them to work together, DeGuardia said.
“Our relationship basically is if it makes sense for Chris, he’s going to be on a PBC card. That group has a whole bunch of 147 pounders, so it makes sense,” DeGuardia said.
Beyond that, having the Long Islander on cards at Barclays Center in Brooklyn can help Haymon’s shows sell tickets there.
One name mentioned after Algieri’s fight against Bone was Andre Berto. He’s not the only welterweight DeGuardia would like to see Algieri in with. He also named Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman.
“I think the Berto fight would be a great fight. It’s an exciting fight style-wise,” he said. “I also think there’s many fights that are out there for Chris. It’s a hot division. So we’re going to evaluate and determine what’s the next best step.”
