IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale (23-1, 14KOs) would love to get Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) in the ring - if GGG decides to come up in weight to 168-pounds.
DeGale is scheduled to take part in one of the biggest fights of his career on January 14th, when he travels to the United States for a unification with WBC champion Badou Jack, who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Golovkin traveled over to the UK last month and stopped DeGale's Matchroom stablemate, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, in five rounds.
Last month, Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, and GGG's trainer Abel Sanchez, told BoxingScene.com that they would have happily accepted DeGale instead of Brook - but the mutual promoter of those boxers, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, had only offered Brook when Chris Eubank Jr. was pulled from the contest.
Golovkin's next fight is potentially a mandatory defense against Daniel Jacobs in March of next year. After Golovkin has his fight in March, there are ongoing discussions to face Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September. If a deal with Canelo gets done, it's hard to imagine GGG taking such a risky interim fight. More than likely he would sit out until September to avoid the risk of injury.
DeGale has studied some of Golovkin's fights and pinpointed several weaknesses that he believes are going to be exposed in the ring.
"A mega fight to me is a fight that I am in and people think I am going to lose. I am the underdog. Golovkin, it's a perfect a fight," DeGale told Sky Sports News HQ.
"It's a hard fight, but a fight that I think I have a fantastic chance of beating him. He's not the biggest middleweight, so if he moves up in weight, I am going to have the size advantage. His boxing ability is very good, he's a former Olympian, he's obviously undisputed world champion, but I've seen weaknesses and I think I can expose them 100 percent."
