Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is getting back on track when it comes to staging events.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, his company has not staged any boxing events in months.
Next Friday night, De La Hoya's company will stage their first event since the start of the pandemic, with welterweight Vergil Ortiz facing Samuel Vargas in the headliner at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. DAZN will carry the card on their streaming platform.
De La Hoya admits that the last few months have certainly been rough on his business.
“It was frustrating,” De La Hoya said to Daily Breeze. “It was a bit odd to say the least because we went from doing 50 shows a year to zero. It was just different. You didn’t know how to adjust. You didn’t know how to work from home or be still and not do nothing.”
A few weeks ago, De La Hoya generated plenty of headlines when he revealed the possibility of an in-ring comeback.
De La Hoya, 47-years-old, has been retired since last 2008 - when he was dominated and stopped by Manny Pacquiao.
At the moment De La Hoya is training on a daily basis to get himself back into proper fighting form. He's sparring up to eight rounds and running miles. His goal is to reach the point of twelve round sparring sessions and to go on eight mile runs, which is what he did during his prime.
While most experts do not expect De La Hoya to make his return - the Golden CEO insists that he's very serious and he might even target the big names.
“Don’t be surprised if I challenge the top guys out there. It wouldn’t surprise me," De La Hoya said.
