MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Will the working relationship between Golden Boy Promotions and Floyd Mayweather Jr. continue beyond Saturday night? Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya is thinking positive.
Golden Boy has co-promoted Mayweather's last ten fights. But in the last few months Mayweather has continued to expand his own promotional company, Mayweather Promotions, by signing fighters and obtaining promotional licenses in several states. Mayweather's company is the lead promoter for Saturday's rematch with Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand.
After Mayweather's company recently obtained a promotional license in Las Vegas, most saw that maneuver as the final piece of the puzzle before they branched out on their own to promote Floyd's fights without Golden Boy's involvement.
"I would hate to think that this would be the last fight that we promote with Floyd. We've had a great relationship. We've promoted his fights for a reason. [Mayweather's adviser] Al Haymon is a very smart businessman and he has us on board for a reason - we know how to promote. We have probably the best team in boxing, in terms of promoting. I would like to think that we will continue to promote Mayweather," De La Hoya said.
