Promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes he can kick-start the career of Miguel Cotto, who has been out of the ring since November 2015.
On August 26th, the Puerto Rican faces Yoshihiro Kamegai for the vacant WBO World Super-Welterweight Title in California, exclusively live in the UK on BoxNation.
“I’m bringing back Miguel Cotto,” De La Hoya told journalists. “We’re starting off with this fight first, and see how things work out. Cotto and I have a great working relationship.”
The four-weight World Champion recently split with former stable Roc Nation Sports after just two fights. Golden Boy Promotions, who also promote Kamegai, has signed Cotto to a multi-fight deal.
This will be his first official fight at Super-Welterweight since 2013, a division in which he won and defended two World Titles.
He lifted the WBC World Middleweight crown in June 2014 with a win over Sergio Martinez and defended the belt against Daniel Geale, but then was stripped just days before the Saul Alvarez fight.
“There’s some great fights we can still do with Cotto,” explained De La Hoya. “Cotto’s a warrior. He’s one of the best fighters out there, still. He had a great fight with Canelo.
“It should be exciting to see what we’re going to come up with for Cotto. [Juan Manuel] Marquez wants to come back, so that would be a very interesting match-up!”
Cotto has claimed Marquez is dragging his feet over a potential meeting, which is rumoured to be planned for the end of the year, but first the 36-year-old must navigate past Kamegai in August.
