Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya believes the sport of boxing will return in the next few months.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most boxing cards were canceled from the point of mid-March through the end of May. Certain cards scheduled for June are getting pushed back as the weeks pass by.
De La Hoya's company saw several of their events get postponed - including the return of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who was slated to return on May 2 as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend, with WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders as the frontrunner to face him.
Canelo's first ring appearance of 2020 is now being targeted for September 12.
De La Hoya is making moves, trying to get the sport back on track - although he admits the immediate future will likely involve events being staged in a closed doors setting, with no fans present.
“America needs sports right now and we’re very confident that we will be able to resume within the next few months.” said De La Hoya to Forbes.
“Boxing is a sport that has survived wars and the most significant events we’ve lived through in recent times. Boxing has always been able to survive and I don’t expect this time to be any different.
“We are discussing plans to restart in July and have had conversations with the commissioners of various states including California, New York, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada.”
