Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya strongly believes that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) vs. Gennady 'GGG; Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) is the next super-fight of boxing.
He predicts the fight will be even bigger than last May's "fight of the century" between welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, which generated 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and half a billion in revenue.
Golovkin, who holds the IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight titles, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC title.
The World Boxing Counil has allowed both boxers to take interim bouts before facing each other in the fall.
Canelo will defend his title against British star Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Golovkin will take on IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade (18-0, 12KOs) on April 23rd at the Forum in Los Angeles.
Very few believe the fight will take place in the fall - should Canelo and GGG win their upcoming fights. Both De La Hoya and Canelo believe the fight will be a lot bigger if both sides continue to build it up.
"It will be a fight to overtake Manny Pacquiao against Floyd Mayweather," De La Hoya said. "It's a fight that will offer action and a knockout. It's only a matter of time before it happens."
Canelo is line with his promoter, stating that a fight with Golovkin will happen but not necessarily committing to an exact point in time.
"That fight is going to to happen, but these are the type of fights that need time for negotiations," Canelo said. "But it will happen because it is one of the fights that I want, one of the fights I want to give to the people."
