A few days ago, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs) received a firm warning regarding his weight.
Joe Gallagher, the head trainer for WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13KOs), has made it clear that his boxer will walk away from the fight - if Canelo fails to make the junior middleweight limit of 154.
Canelo vs. Smith takes place on Saturday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. HBO Pay-Per-View and BoxNation will carry the fight.
Canelo's last fight five fights have takes place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds. He hasn't made the junior middleweight limit of 154 since 2013.
“I’m sure they are going to be professional and I don’t expect slip-ups at the weigh-in. I expect Alvarez to make the weight at 154-pounds. But, to let everyone know, if Saul Alvarez doesn’t make the weight there will be no fight. Liam Smith is world champion and he is here to defend it,” Gallagher said.
“I am not saying Saul won’t make the weight, I expect him to but we have seen there has been a trend in the last few years where fighters come in and say ‘it is a pound, what you going to do? We have made this big fight and sold it.' If they don’t make weight and ask ‘are you going to go ahead with the fight?’. The answer is ‘no we won’t’. We have made our weight contractually and if Canelo doesn’t make the weight then give us our pay check and we will go shopping.”
De La Hoya agrees with their position. However, he says Canelo will EASILY make the junior middleweight limit later today.
"And they should [walk away from the fight if Canelo doesn't make 154], because there is no reason why any fighter should be coming in overweight. Canelo will make the weight with no problem," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.
