David Carmona picked up his second straight win with a 10-round decision over Martin Casillas in their Telemundo-televised headliner Friday evening in Mexico City, Mexico.
Scores were 98-91 (twice) and 97-92 in favor of Carmona, who scored an opening round knockdown and fended off a late rally to preserve the win.
A boxing match broke out early on, as both fighters were measured in their approach. Carmona teased the crowd in dropping Casillas courtesy of a left uppercut, producing the lone knockdown of the bout, but never presenting the threat of a knockout.
Instead, it was a steady night's work for the super flyweight title challenger, who continues to rebuild after his failed bid versus Omar Narvaez last December. Carmona looked sharp in piling up rounds, working behind his jab and putting in dedicated work to the body.
Casillas did his best to make a fight of it, but didn't enjoy any real success until the later rounds, when the bout was well out of reach on the cards. Carmona was too smart to get caught with anything fight-altering, allowing his countryman to let his hands go but maintaining just enough space to minimize the impact.
With the win, Carmona improves to 18-2-4 (8KOs). The win comes a week after Daniel Lozano claimed top honors in the Boxeo Telemundo Super Flyweight tournament, stopping Jonathan Vidal in four rounds last weekend in Tampa.
Carmona could attempt to force a head-on clash. The interim belt he holds makes him the mandatory challenger to the regional title claimed by Lozano, who for the moment has designs on stepping to Narvaez for his own title shot sometime in 2015.
Casillas suffers his second straight loss, falling to 14-4 (8KOs).
