Former two-time champion Daniel Santos (32-3-1, 23KOs) became a three-time champion when he knocked out Joachim Alcine (30-1, 19KOs) in the sixth-round to capture the WBA junior middleweight champion Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada. Alcine was making the second defense of the title he won last July from Travis Simms. Santos became the mandatory challenger last October when he knocked out Jose Rivera.
As both predicted, Santos came out throwing bombs while Alcine appeared to be intimidated by the aggressive style and couldn't switch-up. A crowd of 8,000 cheering Alcine fans saw Santos land a left hook in the sixth to drop Alince, who tried to get up but went back down for the count.
IBF super middleweight champ Lucian Bute was at the show to support his countryman Alcine, he was given a standing ovation when introduced to the crowd and UFC champion Georges St-Pierre was also there to lend support for Alcine. Santos returns to Puerto Rico with his new title and will likely receive a hometown celebration upon his arrival.
