The 'regular' featherweight champion of the World Boxing Association, Argentina's Jesus Cuellar, had words of praise for the achievement of Mexico's Leo Santa Cruz, the new WBA "super champion" at 126-pounds.
In addition, Cuellar warned that Santa Cruz is the fight he wants, but for now there are plans to make another defense in December. Cuellar (27-1, 21 KO) told Carlos Irusta that he's currently training in Oxnard, California.
"We can fight whenever he wants. I hope it's for the middle of next year," Cuellar stated in response to the mandatory ordered which directs Santa Cruz to face him within a maximum period of 18 months.
"Whenever Santa Cruz wants to do it, I'm ready. Every time I enter the ring, I go in there to fight and win."
For now, Cuellar has plans to fight in December against an opponent and location to be determined. The champion acknowledged the hard work and performance of Santa Cruz against Abner Mares on Saturday in Los Angeles and said of him:
"Besides being very intelligent, he's a very good boxer, uses his long arms, he's left-handed. He has the distance and is complicated to fight - but if we prepare correctly and throw accurate shots and box, we won't fall into the mode of making excessive attacks as what happened to Mares, because [Santa Cruz] is very good at counter-attacks."
