According to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, Mexico's Carlos 'Príncipe' Cuadras (36-1-1, 27 KOs) and his countryman Juan Francisco 'Gallo' Estrada (35-2, 25 KOs) have until June to reach an agreement or a purse bid will be ordered.
Back in April, the World Boxing Council ordered the two former world champions from Mexico to face each other in a super flyweight world title eliminator.
The order was a surprise to Cuadras, because the WBC had initially ordered him to face the winner of the March world title fight between Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez. But the controversy involved with the Sor Ringvisai vs. Gonzalez outcome created a big stir in the boxing world.
Sulaimán revised his prior order and instead issued a new one where Gonzalez will get a direct rematch against Rungvisai, and now Cuadras would have to face Estrada for the WBC's interim belt. And the winners of both contests will have to face each other.
The rematch between Rungvisai and Gonzalez is being targeted for a date in September.
There is no word on where Cuadras and Estrada would end up.
"[Cuadras and Estrada] are negotiating, they are moving forward, they seem to want a separate date and this coming June 8 ends that period [of negotiating]. If they do not reach an agreement then we will call for an auction," Sulaiman said to ESPN Deportes.
Cuadras looks forward to the contest with Estrada - and the two fighters know each quite well.
"Actually I was expecting things to be different, as Mauricio had said that the winners of the event [in March] were going to face each other. But now Chocolatito has a direct rematch with Rungvisai , because I think ... [Sulaiman] views the fight between me and Estrada as being an attractive one where all of the Mexican people will see who is the best super flyweight in Mexico and then the winners [of the two ordered fights] can face each other," said Cuadras to El Nuevo Diario.
