A major obstacle has been cleared for boxing's possible return to Yankee Stadium in New York. It has been three decades since boxing took center stage in Yankee Stadium. The last time being when Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton at the old stadium.
The Yankees organization told the Associated Press on Friday that an agreement was been reached with a family that scheduled a bar mitzvah on the Foreman-Cotto target date of June 5. The bar mitzvah was for Scott Ballan, the son of the lead bond lawyer for the financing of the new $1.2 billion dollar stadium.
"We want to thank Jon Ballan and his family for their graciousness, understanding and good will in helping to accommodate the Yankees," the team said in a statement to The Associated Press. "We will now meet with Bob Arum and his organization to continue discussions to bring this fight to Yankee Stadium."
If a deal with Yankees organization is reached, the fight would shift from the scheduled date of June 12 in New York's Madison Square Garden. The AP says the stadium would be configured to hold 30,000 fans.
