Since knocking Ryan Garcia out and forcing him to say no mas in front of a Las Vegas crowd, the chatter surrounding one particular subject has gotten louder and louder. For a number of years, Canelo Alvarez has rightfully held the throne as the face of boxing. His pay-per-view numbers, world title wins, and ability to pack out the house have been well chronicled. But, as mentioned previously, Gervonta Davis believes that he’s done more than enough to usurp the Mexican star.
While the two continue to make their case, Claressa Shields sports an incredulous and dumb-founded look on her face. Although she respects both Davis and Alvarez wholeheartedly, she believes that she should be regarded as the biggest star of them all.
“If I’m not the face of boxing, who is?” Questioned Shields on a recent Instagram Live session. “I got more accomplishments than everybody, that’s for sure.”
Popularity aside, Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) is hoping to take her superstardom to another level come June 3rd. On the night, the former three-time undisputed champion will look to definitively end her rivalry with Hanna Gabriels when they meet up in the main event slot in Shields' hometown of Detroit.
For the former two-time Olympic gold medalist, her desire to be recognized as at least one of the faces of boxing stems from what she views as a propensity for fighting the best. Though she refrained from naming any names, she did acknowledge that several of her male counterparts, even some of the more well recognized ones, are modeling tenuous resumes when juxtaposed next to her own.
“You can’t become a three-time division world champion if you don’t fight against the other champions in the other divisions, I did that. And that’s why I’m one of the faces in boxing. I’m a three-time undisputed champion.”
