In the Second Annual Race of Champions to honor "Jose Sulaiman," - legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. discussed the recent developments involving his son, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32KOs), who moves to a catch-weight of 172-pounds to battle Polish contender Andrzej Fonfara (23-3, 15KOs) on April 18th. The location and venue have yet to be revealed.
He says the fight will be a very tough return after being away from the ring since last January. A win will set up a fight with WBA/IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch. The Chavez-Froch fight was going to happen on March 28th. The champion suffered an elbow injury and withdrew. He plans to rehab the elbow and then wait for a Chavez fight in June.
"It will be a tough, tough fight, but if Julio wins then he will face Froch," Chavez Sr. said.
NBC is being mentioned as the American broadcaster for Chavez-Fonfara. The Mexican broadcaster is unknown. Chavez Sr. is a commentator for TV Azteca and his son was often featured on the network. He would not reveal who would carry that fight.
"It will be a surprise [which network will carry it]. Everything is for the sake of my son. He is training with everyone in California," Chavez Sr. said
