Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is receiving a lot of feedback from fans, who want to see his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs), get in the ring with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs).
The two sides are negotiating a catch-weight bout at 165-pounds that would headline an HBO Pay-Per-View event on May 6th. They are trying to work out the financial details to a point where both sides are satisfied.
Canelo, who holds the WBO junior middleweight title, would move up from 154-pounds, while Chavez Jr. would come down from the super middleweight limit of 168.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Chavez Jr. was offered a guarantee of $6 million and some other incentives to take the fight, but he wasn't very impressed with the terms on the table.
The negotiations are going to come down to the wire, as Canelo was recently installed as the mandatory challenger to WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders. The World Boxing Organization approved Canelo's request to take the mandatory role - if he decides to follow through with his plan to jump up in weight to 160-pounds.
Chavez Sr. says an all-Mexican showdown, between his son and Canelo, is the fight every fan is asking for - not a clash between Canelo and Saunders.
"The fight with Saul Alvarez is being negotiated. That is the fight that everyone wants to see. The negotiations are very advanced. The fight could very well take place in May... they only need to agree on the money where both of them come away as winners. The weight has already been set, and they would both come in at 165-pounds. I think this fight will become a success in every aspect. They are going to break all of the attendance records. They are going to break [the numbers that] I did in Texas [in 1993 with Pernell Whitaker], as they are both great boxers," Chvez Sr. said.
