SAN ANTONIO, Texas. - WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is very upset with the week-long complaints from his mandatory challenger, Marco Antonio Rubio. Later at the Alamodome, Chavez makes the second defense of his title and he hopes to end the fight by knockout. Rubio has been protesting the selection of referee Lupe Garcia. He would rather have a non-Mexican referee involved in the fight. The WBC rejected Rubio's protest.
"It's true that I don't like Rubio, and on Saturday I hope to defeat him - and by knockout if possible. Rubio talked a lot about me behind my back, but not to my face. Now he comes out and rejects the referee Lupe Garcia. What's happening is, he is looking for excuses for his defeat. Rubio has said a lot of offending things about me, like stating that he'll knock me out in six rounds and a lot more. I respect him. But no matter what, I will show him who the champion," Chavez said.
"I'm happy to be fighting in San Antonio, the city where I held my first big fight against John Duddy. Right here I've been treated excellently. The Mexican public here has given me a great reception, and I promise to give them a great battle and a great victory."
