Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) has closed his training camp and now counts the day until April 18th, when he faces Polish light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Last year, Chavez Jr. was close to a deal where he would have faced Gennady "GGG" Golovkin at the super middleweight limit of 168. The fight didn't happen because Chavez claims his former promoter, Top Rank, had a clause in the bout agreement which bound him to their company for a few more fights.
"This fight don't happen because the lawyers tell me in the contract it was this fight plus four more fights. I [wanted to do a] fight by fight [deal with Top Rank]. That's why this fight didn't happen. I was ready to make this fight happen," Chavez Jr. told BoxingScene.com.
Chavez Jr. says that Golovkin needs to fight better opposition, by moving up to 168 or 175-pounds. He doesn't see a reason for Golovkin, the WBA/IBO middleweight champion, to face opponents like next month's for, Willie Monroe Jr.
"I think....I know you have your opinion - but the next fight of Monroe Jr....I think [Golovkin] can go up to 175 or 168 and fight better opposition like [Carl] Froch, [Arthur] Abraham...these guys or Peter Quillin or Andy Lee [at 160]. I don't know why he take this guy [Monroe]. I don't why [Golovkin] don't take these risks, because these fights [like Monroe] don't have too much risk. Like me, I have one year off and take Fonfara who knocked down Adonis Stevenson, the light heavyweight [champion]. I like this fight for the fans," Chavez Jr. said.
