Few fighters have tasted the power of both Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).
Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has traded punches with both boxers.
Chavez Jr. had the opportunity to spar with Golovkin in the past. And this past Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Chavez Jr. fought Canelo over twelve rounds.
Chavez Jr. took a lot of punches in the fight with Canelo, He was dominated from start to finish and lost every round on all three of the official scorecards.
After the fight was over, Chavez Jr. told reporters that Canelo never hurt him in the fight. He said his Mexican rival is not a natural puncher. Chavez Jr. said he body was drained from making the catch-weight of 164.5-pounds - and that prevented him from putting his combinations together. He said Canelo's power was not a factor in their contest.
"He didn’t hurt me. He’s not a big natural puncher. I felt his punch but not to hurt me. I just want to tell the people of Sinoloa I apologize. Obviously they wanted a war, I couldn’t give it to them tonight. My body just wasn’t able to," Chavez Jr. said.
Canelo is now scheduled to face Golovkin for the WBC, IBO, IBF, WBA middleweight titles on September 16th at an undetermined location.
In March, Golovkin went the twelve round distance for the first time in his career when he decisioned Daniel Jacobs. But prior to that contest he stopped 23 opponents in a row and only one of them was able to last until the eleventh round.
According to Chavez Jr., the middleweight champ has very strong punches and certainly more power than Canelo.
"Golovkin has very heavy hands, much more than Canelo's. He has more power than Canelo, although he does not have a Mexican style," Chavez Jr. told Fox Deportes.
