Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is pleased with the training switch to veteran coach Joe Goossen. The Mexican star is preparing for his return on April 18 in California against Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara. Chavez was previously trained at one time by Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach.
The Showtime televised match will be the first fight for Chavez without the guidance of career-long promoters Top Rank. Chavez parted ways with them last year and signed up with adviser/manager Al Haymon. Chavez and Top Rank are now involved in a legal tussle over his fight contract.
The fight with Fonfara takes place at a catch-weight of 172-pounds. Chavez has been inactive since last January.
"This week I began working with Joe Goossen who is a good coach. We have seen him with Diego Corrales," Chavez Jr. said to ESPN Deportes. "It's a good showcase [fight], but also a good compromise [because of what we can gain in victory] - and that is precisely why we decided to choose this type of challenge by facing someone like Fonfara to gain confidence and regain my position that inactivity has taken away from me."
