Nearly two years after their thrilling 10-round draw, Jessica Chavez was able to prove to Arely Mucino that she is in fact the better fighter of the two. That much came of her unanimous decision in their flyweight title fight Saturday evening in Ecatepec, Mexico.
Chavez (24-4-3, 4KOs) stayed true to her word and form, sprinting out to a quick start and only allowing small windows for Mucino to trying to narrow the gap late in the fight.
Final scores were 97-93, 99-91 and 100-90 in favor of Chavez, who has now claimed three straight victories. Mucino (21-3-2, 10KOs) was unbeaten in her last seven starts (6-0-1, including the aforementioned draw to Chavez) before watching her run come to an end.
Chavez was in full-fight mode, banging out a unanimous decision over Mucino in their flyweight title-rematch to a Nov. '13 fight that ended in a split tie. she is the better fighter. are ready to go at it again. The pair of always-entertaining flyweight are ready for their rematch, which goes down Saturday evening, live on Televisa from Ecatepec, Mexico.
Andres Gutierrez kept his title hopes alive in dominant fashion, knocking out Nicaragua's Daniel Diaz inside of four rounds.
The bout was his third since abandoning the super bantamweight division, where he was once a top-rated contender but eventually outgrew the weight class. It remains to be seen at what weight he ultimately lands. His handlers insist his title shot will come at featherweight, but fought closer to the super lightweight division in this fight.
Diaz (22-7-1, 15KOs) suffered just his second career stoppage loss. The other occasion came in his lone career title bid, as he was punched into submission in the 11th round of his eventual title fight loss to then-bantamtweight champ Koki Kameda.
Former super welterweight champion Carlos Molina returned to the win column for the first time in over two years, needing just three rounds to knock out late replacement Manuel Garcia.
The bout was Molina's first since losing his title to Cornelius 'K9' Bundrage last October. The 32-year old career spoiler has seen the past few years marred by ring inactivity, last year's trials and tribulations due to his being arrested and ordered back to Mexico.
Molina (23-6-2, 6KOs) was supposed to face Juan Carlos Raygoza, but was forced to settle for Garcia (13-11-2, 5KOs) late in fight week. The change in opposition made no difference to the former champ, who picked up his first knockout win since April '11.
