Charlie Edwards’ promoters Wasserman have had discussions with the WBA interim super-flyweight champion David Jimenez in their attempts to steer him towards a world-title fight in 2026.
It was at the start of September when Edwards, having dropped from bantamweight to super flyweight, won on his return from defeat by his fellow Briton Andrew Cain to convincingly outpoint Mexico’s Salvador Juarez.
He has since spoken of pursuing a fight with the revered Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, the WBC and WBO champion who became the first to defeat his brother Sunny and who on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia fights Fernando Daniel Martinez, the champion of the WBA.
Edwards won the European bantamweight title in 2024 before the narrow defeat by Cain that contributed to him moving down in weight – he held the WBC flyweight title from 2018 to 2019 – but his trainer Stephen Smith wants him to focus on competing at super flyweight and Wasserman, recognising that Costa Rica’s Jimenez perhaps represents the quickest route to a title, hope that it is possible to secure a date before the end of 2025.
“Charlie’s most likely to fight towards the end of this year; start of next year,” Wasserman’s Nisse Sauerland told BoxingScene. “We’re looking at a very big step up; we’re looking at a world title at the moment. The UK’s starved of world champions at the moment and Charlie would love to be a two-time world champ.
“There’s the WBA [interim] champion Jimenez, who’d actually be quite an interesting opponent. We’ve already had talks with him. That would be a great fight for him.
“You need to bring something to the table for ‘Bam’ Rodriguez. I would presume the aim [for Rodriguez] is to unify the titles, so if Charlie has something to bring to the table, then here we go.
“Charlie’s one of these pros – he’s just hungry. He’s still hungry; still very professional, and does everything that’s expected of him.”
Jimenez, 33, stopped Kenbun Torres of Mexico in July in an eliminator for the WBA super-flyweight title.
