Five Toowoomba fighters from Smithy’s Gym are set to fight this weekend with the boxing team travelling to two different promotions in Brisbane in their first trips away for the year.

Jezze “El Rey” Carrasco will take to the ring in his second fight as a professional at North’s Leagues club in Brisbane. Coming off a draw in his debut in Toowoomba in March, Carrasco will be looking for his first professional victory when he takes on Brisbane’s John Duffy. Duffy is also chasing his first victory as a pro boxer after suffering a loss in his debut after a successful muay thai career.

Also on that card, Josh Webb will be looking for some revenge when he takes on Panapa Pereira this time in the stand up game of boxing. Webb, who is now part of the Smithy’s Gym boxing team.

Current Queensland and Australian Junior Amateur Champion Steven Spark will have his first first fight since being crowned Australian champion at this Saturday’s Amateur boxing tournament at the Valley PCYC. Also fighting at the valley is Gavan Hornery and Sam Williams.

Gavan Hornery, another one of Smithy’s Gym’s “Rising Stars” will be having his second amateur fight and after celebrating his 14th birthday on Wednesday is hoping for a late present in the form of a good win this Saturday. The very experienced Sam Williams will be having his first fight for the year and his first for Smithy’s Gym. Williams record contains the who’s who of the Australian amateur bantamweight division and he is excited about his transition to the Smithy’s Gym boxing team.

The amateur trip comes as the Smithy’s Gym is preparing to host its first amateur promotion “Rising Ringstars” on May 20. This will be a pre matched show where the Toowoomba fighters will take on some of the best amateur boxers from around Australia.

“This is great preparation for the three boys fighting at the Valley, who will all be fighting in Toowoomba on May 20” said promoter Brendon Smith.

“We have 5 fighters travelling away this weekend from the gym which has a growing number of fighters preparing for fights and it’s very exciting that soon it won’t be 5 it will be 30. Toowoomba boxing is once again on the rise”.
