David Carmona boxed his way back into contention in the 115 lb. division thanks to a well-earned 10-round decision over Daniel Lozano.
Scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94 in their Telemundo Super Flyweight tournament finals Friday evening in Arcadia, Florida.
The bout was fought on even terms through the first half. Carmona jumped out to an early lead, but Lozano made the necessary adjustments to keep the visiting Mexican boxer honest on the scorecards.
Carmona began to pull away over the final five rounds, though never to the point of dominating the contest. Lozano - a local favorite from nearby Bowling Green, Florida - was able to get inside and negate Carmona's slight height and reach advantages, turning the tide in round eight and holding his own heading into round nine.
The fight was suddenly off the table, however, after Carmona was able to connect on the bout's lone knockdown. Lozano initiated an exchange, attempting to score with a combination upstairs but was sent reeling backwards after getting clipped with a sneak right hand.
It was a flash knockdown, one from which Lozano immediately recovered. However, the damage was already done as the fight was no longer mathematically winnable on the scorecards. Absent the threat of a knockout, Carmona was well on his way to his third straight career win, though hardly resting on his laurels as he willingly exchanged with Lozano until the final bell.
Carmona advances to 19-2-4 (8KOs) with the win, his third straight following a knockout loss to then-115 lb. titlist Omar Narvaez in his lone title bid more than a year ago. There now exists the possibility of returning to the title stage following his winning the Telemundo super flyweight tournament.
All three wins during the tournament for Carmona have come by decision. Leading into the finals, the 24-year outpointed Ricardo Rodriguez and Martin Casillas at home in Mexico City. Friday's bout marked his first career appearance on U.S. soil.
Lozano ends a two-fight win streak in falling to 13-2 (10KOs). The squat Floridian managed knockout wins over Angel Tostado Garcia and Jonathan Vidal to advance to Friday's finals, but was unable to find that lottery punch to turn things his way.
The bout aired live on Telemundo, serving as the main event for the network's Spring season finale. The Boxeo Telemundo series will return with its summer season in July.
Ruben Ozuna was relentless in his pursuit of Gabriel Diaz, scoring three knockdowns en route to a 1st round stoppage in their lightweight contest. The 20-year old Ozuna (3-1, 1KO) struck early and often, tagging Diaz with a variety of shots. The bout was waived off following the third and final knockdown.
Alcides Santiago (5-1, 4KOs) enjoyed a triumphant ring return after being away for more than five years, drilling Torribo Ramirez inside of three rounds. A left hook put Ramirez (3-2, 1KO) down and out to produce the surprise ending in their featherweight affair.
Sanitago Arroyo (1-0, 1KO) forced a 1st round stoppage of Jose Garcia (0-1) in a battle of bantamweight debutantes.
