“This is a tremendous fight to close our spring series, both fighters are world ranked,
young and hungry which are the ingredients to make a great match, the winner of this
fight will be in line to fight for the WBO title,” notes promoter Felix 'Tutico' Zabala, Jr.
The winner has a chance to build momentum while divisional leader Naoya Inoue continues to heal from injury. While Friday's bout is not a mandated eliminator, it's likely that the last man standing lands a title opportunity, whether against Inoue or for an interim title.
Carmona (18-2-4, 8KOs) comes in having won two straight since his own failed title bid, having suffered a 7th round knockout at the hands of then-115 lb. titlist Omar Narvaez. The 24-year old from Mexico bounced back strong to score points wins over Ricardo Rodriguez and Martin Casillas in separate legs of the Telemundo Super Flyweight tournament last summer and fall, respectively.
Friday's bout marks first fight in the United States.
Lozano (13-1, 10KOs) blasted his way to the finals with knockout wins in each of his two tournament entries. The Floridian began his run with an 8th round stoppage of Antonio Tostado Garcia last summer, bouncing back from the lone loss of his career when Matthew Villanueva stopped him in eight rounds the previous October.
A far more demonstrative statement was made last October, knocking out Jonathan Vidal in four rounds in Tampa, where eight of his past 10 fights have taken place. Friday night marks his first true home game, fighting barely 30 minutes from Bowling Green, FL, where he lives and trains.
