The Boxeo Telemundo super flyweight tournament will have closure.
Daniel Lozano and David Carmona are set to square off March 27 in Arcadia, Florida. The bout serves as the headliner for the Telemundo spring season finale, and also the finals for the tournament that began last summer.
“We had a great run in 2014 with history-breaking records and our "tournament" produced Lozano and Carmona, who won both fights last year. They will meet in the finale March 27 at the Turner Civic Center in Arcadia, FL,” confirmed Felix ‘Tuto’ Zabala, Jr., whose All-Star Boxing promotional company is the primary feeder of boxing content for Telemundo.
Carmona (18-2-4, 8KOs) entered last year’s tournament on the heels of a knockout loss to then-115 lb. titlist Omar Narvaez in Dec. ’13. The resurgent contender has won two straights, scoring a pair of unanimous decisions over Ricardo Rodriguez and Martin Casillas to advance in the eight-man tournament.
Like his upcoming opponent, Lozano (13-1, 10KOs) also came into last year’s series following a knockout defeat. The Central Florida native felt like he let his fans down in the Tampa region after his 5th round stoppage loss to Matthew Villanueva in Oct. ’13.
Lozano was able to return to the same venue (A La Carte Pavilion) for his two ring appearances in 2014. A rematch was out of the question as Villanueva abruptly retired from boxing following their fight, so he took out his frustration on the two super flyweights assigned to him through the tournament.
An 8th round knockout of Antonio Tostado Garcia was bit of a surprise, though a sign of things to come in his four-round blitzing of Jonathan Vidal last October. Lozano hoped a title fight would be next, but openly embraces a showdown with Carmona.
The winner will emerge as a viable candidate—though not necessarily next in line—for recently crowned 115 lb. titlist Naoya Inoue.
