Daniel Lozano was crowned the king of Telemundo's super flyweight tournament, but he's not completely in the clear. This Friday's offering of Boxeo Telemundo could very well present his next opponent, as David Carmona squares off versus Martin Casillas in a scheduled 10-round bout at Salon Jose Cuervo in Mexico City, Mexico.
At stake is an interim version of the regional super flyweight title Lozano claimed last weekend with his 4th round knockout of Jonathan Vidal in Tampa, Florida. While he covets a title shot versus Omar Narvaez, it remains possible that the winner of this weekend's showdown gets to him first.
Carmona (17-2-4, 8KOs) returned to the win column this year following his own (failed) run at Narvaez last December, scoring a 10-round decision over Ricardo Rodriguez in July. The win was wedged in between Lozano and Vidal scoring knockout wins, all coming in a four-week stretch that served as the most watched boxing series - in English or Spanish - of the summer, outpacing ESPN2, Fox Sports 1 and the rest of the field.
"This has been an amazing year, one that I will always remember," notes Felix 'Tutico' Zabala, Jr., head of All-Star Boxing, the primary feeder for Boxeo Telemundo events. "There is still plenty of action left, as we look to add to our historic season.
Casillas (14-3, 8KOs) is coming off of a 10-round points loss to unbeaten bantamweight prospect Nikolay Potapov this past April. The bout was his first outside of Mexico.
