LAS VEGAS - Deontay Wilder's co-trainer Mark Breland has received some flack for throwing in the towel in the 7th round of the fight against Fury on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. (photo by Ryan Hafey)
Wilder was down in the 3rd and 5th rounds and wasn't very competitive after the 2nd round. After taking two consecutive shots in the 7th, Breland elected to throw in the towel.
The flack hasn't came from the public but rather from Wilder and his co-trainer.
Jay Deas, Wilder's other co-trainer, didn't agree with Breland's action and Wilder himself wasn't happy and said that he will make a decision in the coming days if he will retain the US gold medalist's service.
When Fury faced Otto Wallin in September, Jorge Capetillo gained a lot of fame for his work with a horrendous cut that Fury suffered. For the Wilder rematch Capetillo served as more of a camp coordinator and said Breland absolutely did the right thing.
"I think Wilder is a warrior and he will use the rematch clause. With that said, I think they did the right thing. Tyson was dictating the pace and I think little by little he was breaking him down and could have hurt him bad," Capetillo told BoxingScene.com.
As for Fury's performance, Capetillo said that he did exactly what he said he would do.
"He is a man of his word. He said he was going to do it. He trains hard and prayed to God and look at the rest. He is macho and he knocked him out. Nothing is easy. I give respect to Wilder but Fury is just too much. I always would say that Fury could win on the cards or on the knockout and he did it," Capetillo explained.
Wilder has 30 days to formally exercise his rematch clause with a July deadline for the trilogy bout to take place although both Premier Boxing Champions and Top Rank Inc. can mutually agree to extend the deadline.
