Chepo Reynoso, trainer for Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs), has no interest in discussing last week's fight involving WBA/IBO/IBF/WBC middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Reynoso says their entire focus, at the moment, is on Saturday's fight against WBO junior middleweight world champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13KOs). The HBO Pay-Per-View fight takes place at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Canelo and Golovkin were in talks earlier this year, after the World Boxing Council ordered them to face each other in the fall. At the time Canelo held the WBC's middleweight title and Golovkin was the mandatory challenger.
The fight never came and their negotiations hit a wall when Canelo vacated the WBC title and dropped back to the junior middleweight division. The sanctioning body then named Golovkin as their full champion. There is a verbal agreement between both camps, to stage a Golovkin vs. Canelo fight in September of 2017.
Golovkin was in action last Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, where he stopped IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook in five rounds.
Brook, before he was stopped, was able to get in some very good shots on Golovkin and made the punching machine look vulnerable at times.
While Chepo admits that he watched the contest, he has no desire to discuss his thoughts, Golovkin's flaws or anything else related to that fight. But he's willing to talk GGG - once they get Smith out of the way.
“Reaction [to Golovkin's win]? There was no reaction, we just watched the fight,” Reynoso said to Matt Christie of Boxing News. “We knew what the outcome would be. We’re not interested in flaws with Golovkin. We’re interested in flaws with Liam Smith, we don’t care about ‘GGG’ right now, we’re worried about Liam Smith.”
“When it’s the right time to make comment of Golovkin we will. Now isn’t the right time. We have total respect for Liam Smith and his team, and we won’t make any comments on any fighter other than Liam Smith. This is the fight we have in front of us. After September 17, if victorious, ask any questions you want. But right now, this is all about Liam Smith.”
