Former champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs) is looking forward to teaching Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs) a big lesson on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo-Lara is happening at a catch-weight of 155-pounds and Lara's WBA 'regular' junior middleweight title is not at stake. Canelo denies Lara's claims that he's struggling with weight, he doesn't have interest in Lara's title, because he regards Floyd Mayweather Jr. as the real WBA champion at 154.
"I'm giving him the opportunity because he talked a lot of trash, through the media, through social media and Twitter, but he is a good 154-pound fighter - I'll give him credit for that, but this fight is more about glory and honor for me," Canelo said.
"I don't want that title because it's an interim-belt. I don't care about an interim-belt. I'm fighting for honor, because of all the trash that Erislandy Lara talked these last couple of months and it's time to fight him on July 12th and shut him up."
Golden Boy Promotions, who promote Canelo, are restricting their company at the moment. Multiple executives have either left or have been fired - including CEO Richard Schaefer. Canelo says he is not concerned about the internal workings of Golden Boy and wants to keep his full focus on training hard.
"I don't really worry about that. Whatever situation they have going on in the company, that doesn't really concern me. I just go in there [to the gym], do my job and train. As long as they keep running my career, keep on moving my career forward - I really have nothing to say about that. It doesn't bother, that's among [the people in] the company," Canelo said.
With the word coming down that Mayweather is likely going to face Marcos Maidana for a second time, on September 13th, Canelo only had a single comment on the fight.
"Hopefully this time around it won't be such a dirty match," Canelo said.
