Outside of his IBF title win against Jose Pedraza in 2017, Gervonta Davis has opted against taking on truly solidified world champions. Instead, the 28-year-old deleterious knockout star from Baltimore, Maryland, has nabbed a number of secondary titles.
In turn, his detractors have consistently chastised him while attempting to place his feet to the open fire. With names such as Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko, and countless others floating in or around his weight class, fans have salivated over possible matchups between them.
In any event, even with a loud chorus of criticism following him, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) has never appeared bothered by the outside noise. His head trainer, Calvin Ford, agrees with the path in which Davis continues to go down.
Although countless pugilistic hopefuls sit back and dream of one day clutching a golden trinket and repeating that feat time and time again, Ford is of the mindset that championship aspirations, while admirable, shouldn't be the focal point.
“They not important to me,” said Ford to Thaboxingvoice when asked how important it is for Davis to win world titles. “Certain people were in certain situations to have a better chance to get to them.”
Davis though, in the absence of winning more recognized titles, has supplemented his somewhat lack of accomplishments with extraordinarily hefty paychecks. In addition to his fattened bank account, Davis has established himself as one of the biggest and brightest stars in all of boxing.
After recording roughly 300k pay-per-view buys for his sixth-round stoppage victory over Rolando “Rolly” Romero earlier this year, Davis will look to improve on those overall numbers when he takes on Hector Luis Garcia on January 7th, at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.
Ford, fully focused on leading his fighter to an eye-catching victory on the night, is apathetic towards Davis and the lack of super titles in his trophy case. When asked to pinpoint the most salient goal to team Davis, Ford offered up a succinct answer.
“Money.”
