A deal has been reached for Troy Williamson to fight Callum Simpson, according to Williamson’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
Before the conclusion of their broadcast agreement with Sky Sports the 29-year-old Simpson established himself as one of Boxxer’s most valuable assets. The promotional organization has since agreed to work with the BBC, and while considerable uncertainty surrounds the future of many of the fighters with which they had been associated, Simpson, at least, appears central to their plans.
Simpson won the vacant European super-middleweight title in June when stopping Italy’s Ivan Zucco, having previously established himself as the British and Commonwealth champion at 168lbs. Victory over the 34-year-old Williamson – promoted by Matchroom – could take him closer to the total of the three British title defenses he requires to win his Lonsdale Belt “outright”, as he has in the past aimed to do.
There had remained the possibility of purse bids taking place for an appealing fight between Simpson and his fellow Briton Hamzah Sheeraz for the European title, but Matchroom’s Hearn told BoxingScene: “We’ve agreed a deal for Troy Williamson to fight Callum Simpson, so that will be Boxxer’s next show – Callum Simpson against Troy Williamson. That will be in November, December.”
The rearranged British heavyweight title fight between Frazer Clarke and Jeamie Tshikeva has already been confirmed for November 29 at Vaillant Live in Derby, England and represents the start of the partnership between Boxxer and the BBC.
Queensberry Promotions’ Frank Warren, who guides the career of Sheeraz, had also been asked about the possibility of his fighter challenging Simpson, and he told BoxingScene: “That ain’t gonna happen, that fight, I don’t think. I think Hamzah’s well past that. I’m in the Hamzah Sheeraz business – that’s the business we’re in. I just think, with what’s happening with Hamzah, he’ll have better opportunities than that.”
