As reported by BoxingScene’s Rick Reeno, powerful boxing adviser Al Haymon has added more names to his increasingly large list of fighters. Among them: Minnesota middleweight Caleb Truax.
Truax caught up with BoxingScene.com briefly to talk about what this signing could mean for him.
“It was something that we had been working on for a while, and I thought it was just the right move to make, because he gets guys big fights — and he also has a few middleweights that are big fights that I’d like to get in there with,” Truax said. “We talked about Danny Jacobs and Peter Quillin, and now it seems like David Lemieux is on Showtime. That’d be an easy fight to make. Fernando Guerrero, he’s a middleweight. Jermain Taylor, it’d be nice to get a rematch with him. I think it was just the right move. It’s a way to get real big fights.”
Truax is 23-1-2 with 14 KOs. That lone loss came against Taylor in April 2012, though Truax did drop Taylor late in the fight.
In a recent interview with this scribe prior to the Haymon announcement, Truax had mentioned that the middleweight division is wide open for him — that he could fight on Showtime or on HBO if the opportunity’s there, and that he could fight boxers promoted by either Top Rank or Golden Boy.
Now that he’s with Haymon, the question was posed about whether the politics of the sport could mean that things might not end up being as wide open.
“I’m not sure,” Truax said. “It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out, because he is my adviser now, but my promoter is Seconds Out and Warriors, and they work with both Showtime and HBO.”
Truax said he recently signed a three-year contract with the promoters. His next appearance in the ring will on July 25 against Derek Ennis in the televised co-feature of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.”
“I’m just excited to see where it [the Haymon signing] leads. I definitely have to impress against Ennis and get this out of the way first and get a win on TV,” he said. “Otherwise it’s all for naught. I’m not going to get big fights even with I’m Al Haymon if I don’t get wins in fights I should get wins in.”
