For Brian Mendoza (18-1), Saturday night cannot come soon enough.
The 26-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada based fighter will face Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna (28-3-1) at Microsoft Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles in a bout televised as part of a Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 card.
Headlining the main portion of the card, which takes place on FOX, will be WBA super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara who takes on Greg Vendetti.
Mendoza will be fighting for the first time since dropping a split decision to Larry Gomez in late November. He is also moving up in weight after struggling to make the 147 pound welterweight limit his past few fights.
“I’m feeling a lot healthier and stronger now dropping to 154. Not having to stress about forcing myself down to 147 is allowing me to focus on technique, strength and conditioning to prepare for fight night and because of that the world is about to see a completely evolved fighter on August 29th,” Mendoza told BoxingScene.com.
This will also be his first fight under the Premier Boxing Champions banner after having recently worked with Top Rank Inc.
PBC has a vast super welterweight stable which includes Jermell Charlo, Erislandy Lara, Tony Harrison, Jarrett Hurd, Brian Caataño, and several others. Mendoza believes it is perfect opportunity for him.
“I think stylistically it’s a huge opportunity for me to show the world what I can do as a fighter. PBC is giving me a great platform to really put my skills on display and I plan to take full advantage of the moment,” he explained.
In the co-main event on FOX, Alfredo Angulo faces Caleb Truax in a super middleweight contest.
