Brian Mendoza (18-1) is very excited to make his Premier Boxing Champions debut on Saturday night against Thomas "Cornflake" LaManna (28-3-1) in a bout that will be televised on FS1. In the main event on FOX, WBA super welterweight Champion Erislandy Lara will defend his title against Greg Vendetti.
Not only will Mendoza be fighting under a new promotional banner, he will also be fighting in a new weight class as he moves up to 154 pounds. This will be his first fight since losing a split decision in November to Larry Gomez in his last fight as a welterweight.
The 26-year-old Las Vegas based fighter expects to put on a dominant performance against LaManna and put the rest of the super welterweight division on notice.
"A win over him is a statement that this is the division I’m going to be making some serious noise in and it’ll be the first of many to show that I’m coming for the top of the 154lb division," said Mendoza.
"I've built a really solid team and with my head trainer Ismael Salas and my strength and conditioning coaches Ed Jackson and Tony Brady behind me I feel unstoppable."
In addition to Mendoza, world class trainer Ismael Salas has a deep stable of fighters that he trains out of his Las Vegas gym which includes Lara.
Mendoza admits that he doesn't know a lot about his stablemate's opponent but expects him to put on a spectacular show.
"I don’t know much about Lara’s opponent but what I do know is that Lara is looking very sharp in camp and I think he’s ready to show that he’s still got it and that he’s a top dog of the division. I know he’s itching to take the belts from the other champions as well," Mendoza told BoxingScene.com.
