Last month, Top Rank closed out their summer “Bubble” series in Las Vegas with Oscar Valdez stopping Jayson Velez in the 10th round of the main event. All of the series’ fights were broadcast by Top Rank broadcast partner ESPN on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June and July along with three Saturday cards that took place in Mexico.

Velez would hit the canvas a total of 3 times but was very competitive throughout the fight. ESPN expert analysts Andre Ward and Tim Bradley were critical of Valdez’s performance. Valdez (28-0) appeared indecisive at times as he appeared to still be getting used to Eddy Reynoso’s style of training.

WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (37-1), who has successfully defended his title 6 times, is supposed to be up next for the former featherweight champion. Ward and Bradley both predict a difficult fight for Valdez against the hard hitter.

The 28-year-old Berchelt also wasn’t impressed by Valdez and said that his rival needs to try something else when they meet in the ring.

“I believe he needs to do something different than he has done these last few fights if he wants to face me. Both of his outings at 130 pounds haven’t been impressive,” Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.

Berchelt expects a great battle in spite of Valdez’s recent performances. He believes that his opponent’s pride and determination will make the fight exciting.

“Anything can happen in boxing. Without a doubt it will be a great fight. When you have two Mexicans in a ring a great show is guaranteed,” Berchelt stated.

Berchelt was last in action back in June when he stopped Eleazer Valenzuela in 6 rounds in a non-title bout.
