SHEFFIELD, England – Arslankbek Makhmudov had the name of only one man on his lips following his victory over Dave Allen.

Russia’s Makhmudov had traveled to the UK for the first time to take on the popular British heavyweight at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, England. Allen, although favored by many, was always an underdog with those who know the sport, and he knew it. Allen had admitted himself to BoxingScene in the build up that he would have to go through hell to secure a win. Hellish it became, too, as Makhumudov couldn’t miss. Regardless, plucky Allen was able to absorb everything the Russian threw at him.

Allen’s actions were heroic as he marched forwards in an attempt to pick up the win of his career, but it mattered little, as Makhmudov was awarded a wide decision win after 12 rounds – even with two point deductions. Allen, who is yet to touch the canvas in his professional career, has always been known for his toughness, but even Makhmudov didn’t realize just how durable the fan favorite was.

“He impressed me a lot because no one would want to fight me, you see them change their mind but it doesn't work with this guy,” Makhmudov said. “I was surprised, for 12 rounds, you saw it. Marc [Ramsay, my trainer] told me he's got balls but not technique, just box and you'll stop him in six rounds. I thought okay, I'll stop him in the first round but I couldn't even do it over 12, that's why I'm really impressed. I think he's got an iron chin, it's not normal."

A lot was made all week about what was next for each man should they win on Saturday night. It seemed, with both fighters being linked with former world champions. Allen looked set to face Deontay Wilder, whilst Makhmudov took it upon himself to talk up a clash with Anthony Joshua. The Russian’s desire remains the same.

"Honestly, I just want Anthony Joshua,” Makhmudov said. “We made a deal already, like I said, it's my dream fight. I need to rest, see my family but even before the fight, I was very focused. This is the fight of your life but the next step is Joshua, that's it."
