Andre Dirrell’s early exit from the Super Six Tournament in 2010 prevented us from seeing some possible matchups between him and the other elite fighters of the division. Dirrell suffered a head injury that put him out of commission for over a year when his opponent Arthur Abraham struck him will he was down and defenseless in their fight in the 2nd leg of the tournament.
One of the most anticipated matchups was Andre Dirrell versus Andre Ward in a fight that would’ve pitted the two best undefeated American Super Middleweight contenders against each other. With Dirrell’s departure from the tournament, the scheduled fight between the two never took place.
Dirrell was on the most recent edition of BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab and spoke about a fight with him and Ward still being a possibility.
“No question. Andre Ward is at the top. He’s the tip. So ultimately that’s what everybody wants to see. I definitely want that fight to happen one day. I believe that fight will happen one day and I’m just building up until it does man,” said Dirrell.
The two former 2004 Olympians have taken different paths in their careers since the Super Six Tournament. Ward went on to win his first world title and ultimately won the entire tournament while Dirrell’s injury stalled his career and put him on ice for the better part of the last 2 and half years.
But now with Dirrell making his return and signing to TMT Promotions under Floyd Mayweather Jr and rapper 50 Cent, he now has a chance to get to that same level Ward is currently at. He understands he needs to build himself up but it’s only a matter of time before they finally meet in the ring.
“We’re two great friends. I’ve always respected him, he’s always respected me. Our styles just fit. It’s really a must see. So it’s definitely something I want to happen and it’s definitely something I believe will happen”.
