At the moment, multi-division champion Amanda Serrano is having a tough time in training camp, because New York Governor Andrew Cuomo sent down an order that closed many establishments to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
As part of that order, gyms and health clubs were forced to shut down.
Serrano (38-1-1, 28 KOs) is now having to find alternatives to continue her training regimen for the scheduled fight with unified junior welterweight champion Katie Taylor (15-0, 6 KOs), tentatively scheduled for May 2 in Manchester, England.
Their fight is the co-featured attraction to the heavyweight clash between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin.
The Whyte-Povetkin event is one of the few boxing cards still standing for Cinco De Mayo weekend. Most others have already been canceled.
“To date, the fight has not been canceled, but in New York the gymnasiums were closed due to the virus. They don't want people to be spreading the virus. At home we don't have the proper team to train for such a big fight,” said Jordan Maldonado, Serrano's coach, to Carlos Gonzalez.
In addition to public gyms, private ones are required to keep their doors closed until further notice to maintain social distancing that would help control the spread of the coronavirus.
This order has not been adopted in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, so Serrano could choose to travel to continue her camp/
"In New Jersey they are open, but I suppose it is a matter of time before a similar order is passed [for those states]," Maldonado said.
“We find it difficult to train. We are waiting to see if this [coronavirus] is resolved quickly. You are allowed to run, to go to a park, but it is not the most ideal scenario [to prepare for a fight]. They have already told us that if they cancel it, we would have to wait for a new date. There is nothing we can do, but with the hope that [the fight] will happen."
