BoxingScene.com spoke to WBO interm junior middleweight title holder Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo about his April 24th fight with Joel Julio that is going to be televised by HBO. Angulo says he is ready to go and is itching to return to the ring for the first time since November. When asked about a possible fight with Miguel Cotto later in the year, El Perro didn't hesitate in saying it would be an interesting fight and one that he would like to see come to fruition. See what else the Mexican star had to say in this exclusive interview.
BoxingScene.com: You are putting the finishing touches on your training camp. Overall how did training go for your upcoming fight with Joel Julio?
Alfredo Angulo: Everything went great. Thank God everything went the way we planned. We were up in Big Bear. It was tough and hard like they always are but I feel prepared and ready to go. We had a Russian guy and another guy in for sparring. I think he (The Russian) was 18-0. I can't remember his name but they gave me the work I needed to be ready.
BoxingScene.com: Are you on track to make weight okay?
Alfredo Angulo: Yes my weight is fine. We shouldn't have any issues at the weigh-in.
BoxingScene.com: Who do you think will win in the main event between Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek?
Alfredo Angulo: Adamek really isn't a heavyweight. I think it depends on how Arreola trains and what kind of shape he is in. Adamek can move around very well in the ring so Arreola needs to be prepared.
BoxingScene.com: How about the Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman fight. Who do you think wins that?
Alfredo Angulo: Foreman is a good boxer and his movement may give Cotto problems. I think Cotto will eventually catch him though. I think if he lets his hands go and connects he should come out with the win. Cotto is a great boxer too and he hits harder.
BoxingScene.com: Assuming you win against Julio and Cotto beats Foreman what do you think about a fight between you and Cotto?
Alfredo Angulo: (laughing) Look, right now I am training and concentrating on Joel Julio. Once this fight is over and if everything goes well then we can look at that. If it was to happen I would be happy with that. Fights between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are always big fights. There is always a big buzz around the fights between Mexicans and Puerto Ricans because of the quality of fighters both countries have.
BoxingScene.com: I know you have to talk to your promoter Gary (Shaw) and your team to discuss it but I would think it would be a a great fight for both of you. Like you said the rivalry is there. HBO would want the fight. Cotto would already have a fight at 154 lbs. and a title if he beats Foreman. There should be enough money to make everyone happy.
Alfredo Angulo: Yes I agree. I need to beat Julio and he has to beat Foreman. Foreman isn't a knockout artist but he can box. It would be a great fight though.
BoxingScene.com: This is the first time you are fighting in California in a long time. How does it feel?
Alfredo Angulo: I am happy to be fighting back in California. It was a good experience fighting in other places so other people can see El Perro Angulo fight in person but I know I have a lot more fans here in Southern California. Hopefully the fans will be out in full force on April 24th.
BoxingScene.com: Do you have a message for the fans?
Alfredo Angulo: Like always when you see a HBO fight card with the name Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo you know its going to be a great show. On April 24th I don't think it is going to be any different. I want to thank the fans for their support and please watch the fight on April 24th. I don't think they will be disappointed.
