Home can be a place for both celebration and comfort. Alexas Kubicki’s upcoming bout is a case that calls for comfort.

Kubicki, a 22-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will fight on May 9 at the city’s River Cree Resort and Casino. While some fighters head home for a victory lap after a big win, Kubicki is coming off two consecutive losses in title fights.

Last September, Kubicki stepped in on short notice for a daunting challenge, taking on undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora when Fundora’s originally scheduled foe, Ayelen Granadino, was unable to be approved to enter the United States. Kubicki lost that night via seventh-round technical knockout.

Then, barely two months later, Kubicki moved up in weight and met Adelaida Maria Ruiz in late October in a match with the vacant WBC junior bantamweight belt on the line. Kubicki lost a unanimous decision and is now 13-3 (2 KOs).

Her opponent on May 9 is Laura Wollenmann, a 34-year-old Colombian fighter who lives in Switzerland. Wollenmann, 11-2 (3 KOs), is coming off a wide decision defeat last October to former flyweight titleholder Gabriela Alaniz.

The fight art says Kubicki vs. Wollenmann is for the “WBC International Title,” though it does not specify which weight class. Kubicki is rated third by the sanctioning body at 115lbs while Wollenmann is slotted 10th at 112lbs.
