On the heels of headlining the first Telemundo telecast of 2019, Yomar Alamo now has an opponent to close out the summer season.
The unbeaten super lightweight titlist from Puerto Rico will face Mexico’s Miguel Angel Martinez in a scheduled 10-round regional title fight atop the Telemundo summer season finale August 2 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Fla.
“Yomar was such a big hit in his network debut earlier this year, we really wanted to give viewers a terrific, fan-friendly matchup for his return,” Felix ‘Tutico’ Zabala Jr., president of All-Star Boxing, Inc. told BoxingScene.com in securing Martinez (14-2-1, 9KOs) as an opponent. “The Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry matchups always bring the series to another level. It’s a great way to close out the summer.”
Alamo (16-0, 12KOs) made his series debut this past February, scoring a 10-round decision over Manuel Mendez in what also marked his first fight in Florida after having spent the duration of his career in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.
The distance fight ended a five-fight knockout streak for the 24-year old Aguas Buenas native, though providing plenty of thrills for the fans in attendance in the Puerto Rican-heavy central Florida region.
Still, it would be nice to deliver a knockout ending.
“Telemundo is my home as well as Kissimmee, Fla.,” notes Alamo. “I will not fail my loyal Puerto Rican fans of Aguas Buenas and Kissimmee. I know that Martinez is hungry and is coming to take my title, I will make sure my title comes back to Puerto Rico with me.”
Naturally, his opponent has other designs.
“I’m looking forward to fighting in the US, I believe that I can beat Alamo,” insists Martinez, who carries a two-fight win streak into his first career stateside appearance. “I’ve seen video of him and he is one dimensional. I will take the WBO NABO title back to Mexico.”
The event is the last a four-block summer stretch which begins July 12 in Hollywood, Fla. From there comes back-to-back shows south of the border in Mexico City on July 19 and July 26 before closing out in the greater Orlando area which has long supported the 30-years running series.
“We are happy to return the Boxeo Telemundo series back to Kissimmee, Fla., our home for many years,” notes Zabala, whose All-Star Boxing company has served as the primary content provider for Telemundo boxing since its debut in 1989.
