WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin came out guns-a-blazing at a media session earlier this week at his Big Bear training camp to discuss his upcoming May 5th pay-per-view showdown against Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo tested positive for the banned drug clenbuterol in drug tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) on February 17 and February 20. He has since tested negative in three tests conducted in March.
"Again with Mexican meat? Come on," Golovkin said. "I told you, it's not Mexican meat. This is Canelo. This is his team. This is his promotion. Canelo is cheating. They're using these drugs, and everybody is just trying to pretend it's not happening.
"This guy, he knows. This is not his first day in boxing. He proves he gets benefits from everyone and he can get away with it. Check him on a lie detector and then we can find out everything."
BoxingScene.com spoke with Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez couple days after the interview session to get his take on Golovkin's comments and the public reaction.
"I think he is tired of being pushed around. He is tired of - unfortunately some of the comments were misquoted - because when you hire a translator they don't always understand the gist of the things that you are saying but he wanted to make sure that people understood that he is pissed off. He is pissed off and he feels that he is being relegated to second banana. This should be an even playing field and it should be to the point where everybody is on the same page," Sanchez explained to BoxingScene.
Sanchez has been very outspoken and critical of Canelo even in the lead up to their first fight that took place last September that ended in a controversial split draw. He pointed to the scorecards in a few of Alvarez's previous fights that also took place in Las Vegas where the second fight will also take place.
"For us Canelo gets preferential treatment. To me I have said it all along. I have said it for a while. He gets preferential treatment not only with the judges back in the (Erislandy) Lara fight, the (Floyd) Mayweather fight and now with this drug thing it is being pushed under the rug like it didn't happen. It happened so let's get an investigation going and find out what happened and if he didn't nothing and he is clean then he is clean but at least we can get some type of investigation going," said Sanchez.
Sometimes when an athlete is angry they try too hard and make mistakes trying to press in whatever sport they participate in. Sanchez isn't worried about that happening to his fighter and believes that Golovkin will actually fight better being angry and with a chip on his shoulder.
"I like him pissed off like that. I like him pissed off because maybe that is gonna be the catalyst," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
Sanchez said that now they are just waiting for an investigation to be done so that the truth is revealed.
"We just need to make sure that things are done the proper way for everybody concerned," he stated.
Alvarez-Golovkin 2 is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena on Cinco de Mayo weekend and will be distributed by HBO pay-per-view.
