(TOLEDO, OHIO) – The 2012 National PAL Championships rolled into day four of competition at the Seagate Centre in Toledo, Ohio on Thursday. The field continued to narrow in all of the age groups and weight divisions as the boxers continue to chase a National PAL title.
The victors in the two youngest age groups all earned spots in the championship round with their final round bouts taking place on Friday. The 15-16-year-old and open division bouts on Thursday were a mixture of quarterfinal and semifinal contests based upon the number of contestants in their age divisions.
In open division action, Christian Williams (Chicago, Ill.) defeated 2012 Olympic Team Trials light flyweight champion Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.), taking a 16-13 victory over Correa in their flyweight semifinal. Williams advances to a championship round match-up with Olympic Trials flyweight silver medalist Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.).
The bantamweights returned to the ring after having Wednesday off and 2012 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Gary Salazar (Fresno, Calif.) advanced in the tournament with a 28-18 win over Hector Valdez (Dallas, Texas) in the bantamweight semifinal round. Salazar will now face D’Andres Hockerson (Rochester, N.Y.) in Friday’s semifinal competition.
In the lightweight division, Malik Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) continued his run through the tournament, winning a third round disqualification over defending champion Albert Bell (Toledo, Ohio). Montgomery will take on Lavisas Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) in semifinal action on Friday.
Peter Reyes (Long Island City, N.Y.) earned a spot in the medal round with a convincing victory over Kamil Abdulzhanov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in their middleweight match-up. He will face fellow New Yorker LeShawn Rodriguez (Shirley, N.Y.) on Friday.
Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) was scheduled to compete in her first bout of the tournament on Thursday, but received a walkover win following a withdrawal by her opponent, Katie Harrington (Cincinnati, Ohio). She will compete in her first bout since the 2012 Olympic Games on Friday when she faces Dara Shen (Alexandria, Va.)
Friday’s action will begin at 6 p.m. at the Seagate Centre with all of the championship bouts in the two youngest age groups and the remaining semifinal bouts in the 15-16-year-old and open divisions.
